Politics and Irresponsible Rhetoric

Matt Bai has an opionion piece in the NYT discussing the tragedy of the shooting of Representative Gabrielle Giffords yesterday.

He discusses the reckless rhetoric of the current political environment and how it has been getting worse and worse over the last few years. At the end of the piece he asks the poignant questions:

whether we will begin to re-evaluate the piercing pitch of our political debate in the wake of Saturday’s shooting, or whether we are hurtling unstoppably into a frightening period more like the late 1960s.
