There has been a lot in the news today about the wikileaks info dump of US diplomatic cables. One story which caught my eye was the story in The Guardian of a 75 year old American of Iranian birth. Hossein Ghanbarzadeh Vahedi left Iran after the revolution but decided to go back in 2008 to visit relatives and the graves of his parents. When he tried to leave the authorities confiscated his passport and tried to extort him. After 7 months he decided to escape the country and paid two guides to take him across a northern mountain crossing to Turkey. He almost froze to death on the 14 hour overnight horseback journey but made it with jsut a few aches and pains. A really amazing story about courage and perseverance, especially for someone so old.
